Why Early Motor Skills Therapy Matters More Than You Think.

In this post, our very own Pediatric Physiotherapist and Director of Clinical Care Lizz Zahary explains more about Motor Skills Therapy and how it can help your child.

Why Early Motor Skills Therapy Matters More Than You Think.

As a pediatric physiotherapist, I often hear from parents who wonder if their baby is developing “normally.” Maybe your baby isn’t rolling yet, or your toddler seems wobbly on their feet. If you’re unsure, you’re not alone—and early support can make a world of difference.

Why early therapy matters
The first few years of life are a critical time for brain development. During this window of neuroplasticity, the brain is forming connections at an incredible rate. Early motor therapy—targeted support for movement skills like crawling, sitting, or walking—can help strengthen those connections, setting the stage for long-term physical, emotional, and cognitive health.

According to the Canadian Paediatric Society and CanChild at McMaster University, children who receive early intervention for developmental delays often make greater gains and may avoid later challenges with coordination, confidence, or participation in play and school.

What does therapy look like?
It’s not about “fixing” your child—it’s about guiding their movement through fun, play-based activities. A physiotherapist might:

  • Help babies build neck and core strength for sitting or crawling

  • Support toddlers in learning balance and coordination

  • Teach parents how to encourage development through everyday routines

When should you seek support?
If your child is missing motor milestones—like not lifting their head, not crawling, or walking much later than expected—or if you just have a gut feeling something isn’t quite right, it’s okay to ask. Early assessment doesn’t mean something is wrong—it’s a step toward support.

You know your child best.
If you have concerns, speak with your pediatrician or connect with a licensed pediatric physiotherapist.

The earlier we act, the bigger the impact. Let’s build a strong foundation—together.
